Each HEI that I ran on a daily driver for decades required a dedicated module. I would never assume that somehow a condenser and points would simply be mimicking the the module and that the coil couldn't "know" the difference.
When you say HEI, that translates to two different types of HEI.
1/ The big fat HEI distributor, everything is inside. (Coil, Pickup, Module) Just add 12 Volts.
2/ HEI remote coil type. Small cap distributor or existing Chevy distributor.
