Default Alternator Output

How do you check to see what an alternator is putting out? Would it be amps or volts? My amp gauge in my 64 with a good battery shows barely steady on the positive side when under way and when sitting at a signal with the blinker on it pulses from 0 to the slightly negative side in time with the blinker.

Your alternator must be generating 14.2 volts with or without load. Test with meter at alternator, large red wire and ground. Big-K Also test your battery with load tester,

Immediately after starting the engine, if you see the Ammeter needle swing sharply to the right (positive) and then gradually return to near zero, you have an indication your Ammeter and your charging system are working.

You can also look at the Voltage generated by the alternator. Easy place to connect your Voltmeter would be at battery (+) and (-) posts. As BigK said, you want around 14.2 Volts.
