I am going to install the body on the frame, all driveline is in the frame. What process is involved in getting the steering Column in???? Can it be dropped in after the body is sitting on the frame??? There is no interior in the car, and it has headers on the motor.
I installed mine (1962) after getting the dash put together, it was easy to install the steering box/column then and it was out of the way while doing all the other work.
I'm confused...why would you install it before installing the body? Because that's how they did it on the assembly line? I'm just trying to understand why you'd do things the hard way.

I agree. I had no problems installing my steering column with the body on. Not sure why you would install like suggested ???
Through 1962 the column and steering gearbox are one piece. Starting 63 they're separate. I can understand installing the column first in a 63-later car.

So quick I will explain - The 53 54 55 MUST go in before body drop - the hole in the firewall is just big enough for the column - plus you have to push SOOO hard on the inner fender to get it in and you will scratch the inner fender and scratch the column - There is NO WAY to get the column in - NO WAY
- In 56 they made the hole bigger on the firewall and covered it with a plate (plate has to go on the column first before you install the column) - so you can get a better angle to get the column in - then the plate covers the huge hole / It is much easier to get the columns in with body off the frame- also the columns are shorter than 53 54 55
- The only exception is if the motor is out of the car - if the motor is out - the column comes thru the grill oval and core support and be installed with the body on the frame.
- on a 56 up with the motor in the car - the LH exhaust manifold has to come off and the LH generator if it has one on the left side - its not about doing things the hard way - it is actually easier and cleaner - its about what's needed to do in order..... I just installed a column in a 54 and we are dropping th body on the 6th - hope this helps - Chris TiN Restorations
diff between 57 style column and later columns. 57 might be best to install column first , later can be finessed w body on... as i recall
Correct. I substituted a '62 steering unit in my '57 to take advantage of the shorter column (2") and it was very difficult to get in and out with the body on. The exchange of the column was in concert with a complete rewiring of the car. The '57 column has to enter and exit through a hole in the dash, which gives you no ability to flex the column upward.
