I put put an S6-40 in my 64 in 2009. Found a new one in Texas for $1100 shipped. It fits in the tunnel. Had to make an adapter for rear mount. Dent left exhaust pipe to clear side cover. Had to remake the entire shifter to fit stock console. Used C4 bellhousing and converted it to manual clutch. New driveshaft. It is a pleasure to drive with 4:10 gears. I do not recommend it. I rebuilt my original 365HP engine 45 years ago and put in a GM 350HP cam. Drove it to GoodGuys in Columbus Friday. 250 miles. 20.004 MPG. 75 MPH is 2000 RPM in sixth gear. If you drive long distances 5 or 6

speed is the way to go. I would buy aftermarket now.

I would love to see photos, details, etc, of this swap. Shifter in particular.

TIA.

Rockland distributes a "transzilla" 6-speed that is capable of handling 1,200 hp. That must have a main shaft diameter the size of a Sequoia.

I will add that ZF parts are becoming scarce. I like the new Tremec myself ,and they bolt right in. Well kinda.

The ZF is a huge trans.....but it shifts great. As mentioned parts are tricky to find and always have been. The TKX is probably the best bet these days for a bolt in synchro trans.

Yep, ZF weighs 135 lbs and I don't think you can get one in without an engine pull or crossmember cut.

I didn't take any pictures or make drawings when I did mine. It was a lot of work. I would not do it today. I would go aftermarket. No parts are available, so if mine has problems I will have to start over. They were cheap 15 years ago. Now used is very expensive and you don't know the condition. If you already have one sell it and use the money to buy aftermarket.

Here is a picture of the tag and clutch linkage I took today.
