My 5 speed will grind if I pull handle straight down to second gear. If I hold slight pressure to left on hand it shifts fine. It’s installed 427 bb with Z bar clutch set up. Any ideas to what the problem is?. Thanks in advance.
My TKO 600 has done that ever since new. It was modified by Silver Sports for high rpm shifting, at that it excells. 7000 rpm , drops right into 2nd. Low rpm gives a light grind same as yours. You want to sell it ?
Joe,
I have a Bowler Transmissions modified TKO 600, with a lot of internal "good stuff". However, mine does that still sometimes. I believe the 1-2 shift path for a TKO is a little off (not exactly straight down) and so you have to get used to it. Mine doesn't do it under casual driving, only when attempting to shift at higher RPM (6000+). I don't know how many miles you have on it, but after about 500-700 miles mine "loosened up". I spoke with a TREMEC rep and he recommend taking out the stuff I had in the transmission initially (Dex III ATF) and replacing it with Royal Purple Syncromax. Now they have TREMEC High Performance Manual Transmission Fluid. You could try that. And, you might have done this, but if you have a hydraulic clutch ensure you completely bleed the air out of the entire system. I mean, it can be tough to do that. If you think you've go it done, you might do it again.
I don’t use the silver sport release bearing because they are hard to bleed . The Hydramax is the best I have found - open bleed port , when u get a continuous stream it’s bleed . I have a new American Powertrain TKX to install - their white lightening shifter is great . Thanks for your comments
The Tremec 600 has so many advantages from torque rating to the very long first gear and awesome OD. When I'd street race my Tremec 600 it was committed memory to pull the 1-2 shift slightly on the left side. That ensured a smooth shift and with gates you can even powershift 2-3... Tremecs get notchy in the 1-2.....but it's avoidable.
When I pull handle slowly to second it feels like it’s not in correct gate/channel. Hard to explain . Just a little handle pressure to left it shifts ok. My American power train TKX - no problem. I think it’s caused by silver sport corvette side shifter positioning?? .
I've owned 3 Tremec 600's in Shelby Cobras. They all had Pro 5.0 or Steeda short throw shifters. I now own a Tremec 600 with the American Powertrain Hurst Lightning shifter conversion which like yours is not direct top mounted but off to the side to center our consoles. I can't even explain it but I guess by the time I got to my C2 my mind has been programmed to pull the 1-2 with some slight Palm Left Side Pressure . It's not hard to program your mind. Try it 5-10X at 3-4K rpm shifts then commit that to memory. The main thiong is you know Tremecs like that in the 1-2 shift.....at least mine did. Hopefully, you will soon be pulling 1-2 with little to no notchy feeling. BTW.....sometimes a slow shift is exactly that...feeling every notch along the way. When I'd practice racing I used to shift at 3-4K rpm ...as quickly as I can. Again........once committed to memory ..even around town...your foot will ride off the clutch without a surge . And your tremec will be happier (:->),
My American power train TKX in my other car is fine. I bought one for my 67 and the tko600 will be removed and sold. Worst part, SST says nothing wrong with transmission.
The TKX is of course the newest version and likely improved. I've power shifted my 600's with zero issues. But....doing the upgrade....you will have no problem selling a TKO 600 especially if it's the 2.97 first gear with 0.64 OD. GLWS.
