Default 1958 engine

I purchased a 1958 corvette with a swapped engine in the past. It has a 327 Chevy 3858180 block with a 3937184 intake and a Holley 4 bbl carb. The car didn’t come with an air cleaner. It appears an air cleaner won’t fit under the hood.
Any suggestions on how to modify this setup so I can add the air cleaner?
By the way, I knew the condition of the engine and the lack of air cleaner when I purchased it. Got a good deal and now trying to rectify some of the issues.
thanks.

A stock Carter carburetor and intake manifold would solve your hood clearance problem by lowering the profile. You could then use the stock air cleaner as well.

Thank you Pilot Dan. I’ll look into your suggested setup as I rebuild the engine this winter.

I would try finding a drop base air cleaner first like a Mr. Gasket 1487 or similar if you're not concerned about originality. Your local auto parts store should have one in stock to try.

I use this Mr Gasket air filter on my Corvette. I also had to use the lowest profile K&N filter I could find locally to get enough clearance.

The K&N filter is E-1550.

Here it is listed at Amazon.com for $65 USA. I purchased mine over 20 years ago and I believe at that time it was just over $30 Canadian. Wow, prices certainly having been spiking over the years.

Amazon Amazon

Cheers

Ken

I'm not sure about the height of the manifold you have--anything taller than stock may present issues. That being said, a C1 air cleaner (the 2-part type with a serviceable element) can be adapted to a Holley carburetor by using a '67 GTO air cleaner base, which is available in reproduction. The 58-62 C1 air cleaner is one of the lowest profile air cleaners out there. Note that even with a drop base, you will be constrained by how close the lid is to the air horn.
