Default Heater Box Installation Tips

Are there any tips to installing the heater box in a 63? I’ve installed and taken out multiple times because I forgot the gasket one time. Then the climate control cables got in the way. Then the tab didn’t get into the bolt under the drivers side. What a PITA. I’m scratching up the fiberglass underneath the dash.

I thought about taking the radio out, but then not sure if I can put it back in once the heater box is in there.

Are there any tips for a one man job?

Take the radio out then put the heater box in. The radio can be removed and installed with the heater box in place

Great time to install new gaskets while both inner and outer heater boxes are off the firewall. You may need someone to hold the inner box up to the firewall while you loosely put the attaching nuts on from engine side. Even your wife could help do this.

Much easier taking the radio out and then installing the heater box. Thanks for the tip! When I put the heater box in, I was a little skeptical the radio would fit back in. But a little finagling from the drivers side and it went in. But then I had to take everything apart again because the damn heater control wires got hung up. I ended up using a short 2x4 as my helper holding the heater box in place while tightening everything.

Now onto reinstalling the glove box and going engine side with all the heater hoses, expansion tank, radiator, water pump, etc..
