Can someone tell me if the extra numbers stamped here are supposed to be VIN corresponding numbers. I checked these numbers to the 68 car VIN numbers and they don't match.
I am not able to see enough digits in the other number to determine what it would be.
But, the P8A09 translates to 1968-Jan-9. Thus, it would be a Muncie, assembled on Jan 9, 1968.
Beginning about Oct 1968, Muncies (for the 69 model) had a letter stamped at the end of the stamped assembly date.
A for M20
B for M21
C for M22.
Prior to Oct 68, there was NO code stamped on a Muncie case to designate M20, M21, M22.
That is the total number of digits.I have taken the cover off and the gears are 22s. I'm trying to figure out if this trans belongs to the 68 L89 I have. The engine and car VIN match.

The same vin stamp on the engine pad would be the same on your Trans if it was original. I have included a picture below of what it should look like from another 68 corvette. As I’m sure you know, no 1968 corvette L89’s received a M22 tranny but of course those gears may not be original to the trans.
ed427vette, no I didn't know that. Thank you for that, but then, that's why I have you guys. I was curious why it only had 5 digits and not the longer 8 or 9 digit vin number.
