Default Starter help

Can someone share which starter will bolt up to a 283 and work with bellhousing # 3858403? The car had a 307 with the m20, 10.5" flywheel, the 307 is gone and 283 has been rebuilt and installed keeping the M20. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

In order to use that bell you need for the block to be drilled vertically to accept the starter bolts. If so, are the bolts holes side by side near the rear flange of the block, or are they diagonal to one another. If the block is NOT drilled, than you need a bell housing that has bolt holes that are horizontal in the housing, such as these.
Parallel bolts holes in the block, 3664 starter, diagonal holes, 3510 starter and if in the bell, 3635 starter,
Joe

This makes sense, the Block is not drilled. Forgive my ignorance however I do have the original 61 3speed bellhousing, and starter. Can this bellhousing be used with the Muncie M20? Thanks again!

I believe so. If your 283 does not have the threaded hole drilled into the left side of the block for the Z bar pivot hole, then you will also need this bracket.
