Default Cooling System Upgrades

So, are there any members or vendors that have possibly made or discovered a plastic coolant overflow recovery tank that might fit a midyear (63)? I always thought there was a good spot for one on the front of the passenger fenderwell just behind the headlight and only 12"-18" from the expansion tank. I've been looking for ones that might fit the contour of the fenderwell.

With the former engine in my (67 BB) car (a 396 bored out to a 427) running hot and hotter, I was desperate to help out the cooling system and so installed a recovery tank. I never thought about installing a plastic recovery tank and just looked for a metal one. I found one I was very happy with and installed it in the general area you describe. Even though my new engine runs cool I re-installed the same recovery tank. I will bring the car down off of the lift later this week to work on it and will take a couple of pictures of where and how I installed the recovery tank. It works great, looks good and is unobtrusive. I looked at a bunch of tanks before I found one that fit well in the area I intended to install it. I hope you find a plastic one that fits the bill, but if not . . . C.J.

I was finally able to get around to adding a few pictures so that you can see where it is and how it is mounted. Hope this helps.

Here is a link to the one installed in my car.

C2Scho has done a great job with his BB cooling system, but you have a SB and they came from the factory with a recovery tank plumbed into the system and located over the passenger side battery location. Why would you not go that route? Dennis

This is not correct.

The aluminum tank on SBC Vettes is an expansion tank, not a recovery tank. It's there because the aluminum radiators, unlike earlier brass radiators, have no provision for coolant expansion.

The expansion tank operates at system pressure. Recovery tanks operate at atmospheric pressure. Two different functions entirely.

Yes. It is an expansion tank with a hose that drains coolant to the ground. I am looking for a simple recovery tank that the coolant can be drained into and then drawn back into the expansion tank thru the vacuum valve on the rad cap as the system cools. Just to keep from losing fluid and making a mess on my lift and floor.
