When I first got my '66 Coupe over 40 years ago, it had 3 red tail lights. When I had it striped and painted, took the 3rd one out and put backups in.
3 taillights was how they were built back in the day (think James Dean).
If I were you, I would leave it like it is. Good for folks to know you are backing up.
