Default Rear Diff Fill Plug Gasket Type

Well, I was working on my '64 rear diff to change the fluid and when I broke the fill plug loose to pump out the fluid, a piece of the flange cracked off. (not internally) So I ordered a replacement and it comes with a leather I think original type gasket. For the NCRS guys out there or anyone, do these work or do they leak? This is a driver car. I also ordered a copper gasket as well. Let me know your thoughts, thanks.

The 63-4 Diff covers had a steel vent and 1"-20 machine plug. They were both replaced by 1965. The plug came with a leather flat washer, seal. They didn't work too good. The machine threads would wick the oil out and why in 1965 they changed to a 3/4 npt plug. You can try teflon tape or make a seal and see if it works.

I’m dense, so I wasn’t aware of the 63-64 using the leather seal until this summer when I, too, found a cracked plug flange.

I got a new plug and gasket from CC—the threads were machined wrong. Took me a bit to find a used plug and the leather seal works fine.

If you use teflon tape or dope on the threads, get the yellow which is made to resist petroleum products, the white will dissolve over time is what they claim.
