I am installing my rebuilt trailing arms. Got the pivot bolts in, and replaced shims, mirroring the old ones. Now, as I am attempting to reattach the half shafts, there is a huge gap. I raised the arms up and that decreased the gap, but it is still over an inch. I could pull the arms in to get the bolts in, but not sure if that is what I should do? Thanks! Tim
You need to get the arms up on jack stands and close as possible to running height, then work things together. Make sure you don't cross threads, work one bolt at a time. Get someone to help you! Dennis
We just finished installing the half shafts (yesterday) on an 72 LT1 we are currently working on.
We installed the half shafts before we installed any of the shims on ether side of each trailing arm. It made the movement of the trailing arms (side to side) much easier and eliminated any potential gaps as you described. Looks like your idea of using the ratchet straps worked well.
