1st post before I go and look at my first vette. I need some help decoding the tags please. Located in Australia.
the 14,225th Corvette built for 1966. Birthday of February 17th. 467 = convertible, STD.= black vinyl interior. S4439=4,439th convertible built in St. Louis. 988AA=Milano Maroon
Thank you. Any way of confirming it’s a 427, 4 spd 390hp car please?
without original paperwork such as a protect-o-plate, you should be wary, everything can be faked. However, you can check it has an 80# oil pressure gauge and a 5300-5500 redline tach, a red LD sticker code on the back of the gauge cluster (need to use a mirror to see), hood support on driver’s (left) side and a rear stabilizer bar. If the engine is original, aside from the partial vin on the stamp pad, you’d want to see an IL or IM suffix on the engine code with a build date up to 3 months prior to your car’s birthday. Casting number should be 3869942. Original L36 carb is #4160. Exhaust manifolds castings are 3880827 (left) and 3880828 (right). This assumes no California air smog air injection system. There are about 30 other things that people smarter than me can guide you on, but if you post some pics of the stamp pad, overall engine bay and underneath, you’d get a better answer as to potential originality.
I’m not sure where you are in Oz, but the NSW Corvettes Unlimited club has some very knowledgeable people that could probably help you out.

Hard to tell from the reflections, is there something stamped below the 14225 on your VIN tag? If so, this could be the delivery date to the first owner. Above the VIN sequence, the DD after Chevrolet is "delivery date" but stamping up there was really tough with the contortions required and the limited space with the glove box, so if a dealer actually indicated the DD (many did not), they put it below the VIN #.

You have a couple of things a tad off: the 390hp (at least mine) has a 60# oil gauge and a 6000prm redline. The original carb was a 4160 but the specific model #s should be either 3810 or 3811.

I guess you’re right in that the NCRS judging guide says 60# gauge for L36. I’ve just never seen one, always see the 80#. I think there may be some debate on whether both might be correct, judging by the forum discussions. I have an L72, thought all ‘66 big blocks had the 80#, but evidently not!
Here's the car https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...20996137/?Cr=1
Wrong half shafts for a BB car
No spare carrier
Hideous wheels, but it does come with a set of KOs as well + some big block heads, intake and carb etc.
If it has had a body off (as described) it was a while ago.
Still a good price for one that's here.

OOOPS! I'm wrong in that I misread the VIN on the OP's pic and thought we were talking '67, not '66. For '66, the redline was at 5300-5500 rpm; '67 has the higher 6000-6200 rpm red zone. The 80# oil gauge seems correct for '66 too even though it was usually used only for mechanical lifter engines, not the 390's hydraulic. The two Holley carb #s I provided are also for '67.
Guess he bought it ?
Considering how much it cost to get it here, it was good buying, regardless of originality.
Good luck to him, hope he frequents the forum.
