My 65 is an A.O. Smith body so it didn’t come with side pipes. A previous owner added them. My question is was there an attachment to the frame on the forward end or just attached to the manifold? If there is an attachment, a pic would be most helpful.
I just replaced the gaskets and there was a steel bracket welded to the side pipe and attached to the frame on the forward end, left side only. The bracket broke and I was going to have it rewelded but wondered why there wasn’t a bracket on the right side. Hence the question. I removed and threw away the bracket.

I don't know of any bracket at the forward end. If you look at the repro pipes in the catalogs, they look like the factory configuration. It wouldn't be a big block vs. small block difference either — there, the only change was the angle of the down-pipe to mate with the exhaust manifold.
That said, my passenger pipe will sometimes come loose at the exhaust manifold and vibrate against the frame. Maybe your pipe was doing the same. (I should put on some locking nuts but haven't done so in the 30+ years the pipes have been on the car, so probably won't add them any time soon!)
