Default Temp Gauge Pegs

Why does the temp gauge in my 67 Coupe peg on hot when the car has been up to temperature then parked in the sun? Temperature gun says engine is 184 degrees at thermostat housing

Does it actually peg over far right well past 250 deg near the small rivet head, or does it just go up to around 240/250?

Is that with key on? What does it read if you pull the connector wire off the temperature sensor on the intake manifold?

The needle will be resting between 210 and 250 and will spin past 250 to the rivet when I turn the key. Sometimes it will return to the correct temperature if I cycle the key a few times. If it doesn’t return during that trip, it’s back to normal the next day.

I’ve not tried disconnecting the sensor with the key on. Will try it the next time.

Your symptoms sounds like the needle is loose on the shaft of the gauge

If the gauge is hooked up without a ground, it will peg to the right. Make sure it's grounded well.

Kind of sounds like the sending wire is momentarily grounding upon restarting, but more likely something like the sender is internally grounding out upon restarting, maybe from some heat soak or excessive current. Maybe try a different sender, but then that may just create another problem. I’m not good enough with electrical to be of much help.
