Well the 66 developed some squeaking that was rotational in nature. Checked the usual suspects and found noticeable slop in the TA bearing. 6.5 hours to pull the passengers side but with that experience I managed the drivers side in 4. Gary is my go to guy as he did excellent work on my posi and steering box. Unfortunately he is booked up with work until the Fall and I just don't want to loose the driving season. Turns out I will be within an hour of Bair's next week and their running a 2 week turn around.
While I was at it I pulled both half shafts as the zerks on the universal joints are very difficult to get a grease gun on, I figure to have them replaced with solid joints. Here is the question, Bair's will only do total restoration of the shafts at 195/shaft. They sell new shafts at 190/shaft that I may be able to just get over the counter while I am there, save the shipping that I would pay if they mailed back my original ones. Does anyone have a problem with buying new shafts from them?
Can't you take your shafts to a driveline shop and have them do the work for you? We have a shop in Tampa that will replace while you wait if they are not too busy. If you leave them overnight, they will remove the joints, blast and paint them and replace the joints at a very reasonable cost. Check around your area. Jerry
That last point is what worried me. I do have a local place that did the joints on my drive shaft for 150.00 back in 2022 so adjusted for inflation probably close to the 195/shaft Bair's is quoting and I figure Bair's would know how not to bend things. So that brings me back to my original question of new vs old shafts from Bair's.
Bair's uses USA made shafts. I bunged the threads up on mine and bought a new one from them. It looks great, 0 runout and is installed and awaiting my car being done. I've spoken with their shop several times and they've given me confidence they know their chit.
I've used Bairs several times for trailing arms, always helpful and never any issues.
I'd get the new half shafts from Bairs and sell the old ones if you can't replace the u-joints yourself or find a local, "reasonable", shop to do the job.
