What to look out for? My 63 came with the original trans, not in the car (Unfinished restomod). I took it to a shop to have them check it out, but after 3 months they have yet to look at it.
I'm going to pick it up and check it myself. Problem areas to look for? I do my own work anyway; it's probably better this way. What do you suggest?

I have a local customer with an early 63 SWC that I did a lot of work on. One of the things that came to me was the original shifter on the T10. They were weak transmissions, the Muncie although similar is a better trans. They had 16 spline main shafts and the bearing retainers were an odd ball size. The one I rebuilt didn't need gears, the car was never abused and shifted like a hot knife through butter. I was told at the time the gears are long gone and the bearing retainers sold may need to be machined. I don't recall if I machined it or not, I would have to check the file.
Larry at D&L would be the guy who may still have the parts. Since covid, the quality of parts has changed and not for the better. Some of the trans guys I know stopped working on Muncies now, let alone the old T10's. It's all about Tremec OD's now.

I’m no expert, but have built a few back in the day. Second gear seems to go first. Synchro wear let’s it jump out of gear on coast. Later T-10’s had a bushed second gear as I recall. Maybe earlier had shaft wear issues here.
The rebuild on a T-10 is straightforward and simple. 2/3 gears are the weak area. Replace them. Redo the sliders (internal/external) and brass synchros. Check the input/output bearing since you have it out of the car. Check with Paul at 5speeds for parts. I know he only sources from Italy on Muncies. Chinese stuff is junk. His guidance is excellent.
I had to do the same for mine .
If you are not worried about originality you can replace it with a newer muncy or a super T-10 but will need to change the bell housing and clutch fork and linkage .
It gets expensive though .
