What post on the solenoid does the black wire from the ammeter go on? B-(BATTERY) the biggest; or one of the smaller posts; S- (START) or R (RESISTER)? I put it on B (battery) and it's always hot; because when I take ground (-) off of the battery, and touch it to the (-) post on the battery after making that connection; I get a little spark ?

It goes on the B+ terminal, but the circuit is not complete until you turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. The reason it sparks with the meter is because when you connect the meter, it completes the circuit.

According to the wiring diagram, the black wire from the B+ at the solenoid connects to one side of the ammeter and the large red wire from the other ammeter connection goes to the fuse panel, horn relay, etc. The ignition switch position doesn't stop the ammeter from reading key off, or key in run position.
