Default Tremec 5spd Conversion: UPDATE

Wanted to give an update on my Tremec TKX 5 Speed Conversion. I purchased the complete kit from Silver Sport. I had a local restoration company complete the installation. They ended up charging me $2,100.00 labor out the door, including turning my flywheel and fabricating a bracket that they needed. Completed the whole job in 3 days.

The car drives UNBELIEVABLE!!! Super smooth, super quiet and shifts effortlessly. Looks like factory original to the eye. And the reduction in RPMs is awesome. I have the stock 4:11 differential with a 365hp L76. Still has great launch power but very comfortable driving at 70, (that’s as fast as I’ve had so far).

I have the same setup as you with the the L76 and 4.11 rear. I left the 4-speed diagram on the console, so most people think stock. Ran a few laps at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green and the COTA track in Austin, TX.

Did you need to modify the driveshaft?

The Silver Star kit comes complete with a new custom driveshaft. But if you’re piecing a kit together yourself, I assume you’d have to have your driveshaft altered. The Silver Star kit is a complete “direct bolt in” kit. A swap is as easy as a normal clutch R&R.

I just converted mine to a World Class T5 from a later-model Camaro - yes, you need to cut the driveshaft. Best thing I ever did though.... 70 mph at 1700 rpm with 3.36 gears!

I have a 66 with a 4:11 rear and a L-79 power plant. I installed my Tremec years ago. That and a Vintage Air unit install were, by far, the best updates I made. Your shifting will smooth out after about 500 or so miles. Good luck. Jerry
