56 speedometer problem
Below is a copy of a question that a friend sent me, yesterday. I have no experience in that area, Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated..
My speedometer on my 1956 doesn't work and the problem is with the drive gear and driven gear not meshing. I can unhook the cable at the transmission end and with a small section of speedo cable I can tur the gear. At first I thought that the plastic gear was worn out, so I changed it still the same. with my endoscope the gear on the tailshaft also looks fine. I then decided to insert the gear along with the fitting into another of one of my transmissions and I got the same results. Unfortunately I do not have other fittings that hold the plastic gear so that i can compare. It appears that the diameter of the plastic gear would have to be larger than the about 3/4 of inch that mine is, in order to actually mesh.
