Hello all! I have a 1958 vette that has begun to show signs the generator is going bad. Intermittent charging on gauge and no crank condition after a long drive, also have corrosion building up on the negative terminal.
I have attached photos of what I have on the car (is this one even correct?), but also would like to hear about a good source to buy a correct replacement. Thanks!
I am 99% sure the adjustment arm bracket is not correct to the car as well.
When having charging trouble with Delco generators the trouble will be found in the generator or the regulator mounted nearby. The first thing to do is rule one or the other out by full fielding the generator. With a digital voltmeter across the battery and in view place a jumper wire between the F terminal and ground on the generator long enough to get a reading. A working generator will put out 15 to 17 volts at high idle. Then the regulator must be looked at - but not much can be done. You can gently polish the contacts with crocus cloth and hope for the best. If it is already an aftermarket replacement regulator replace it again. The replacements work but are nowhere near as good as the Delco Remy original piece. None are electrically rebuildable.
If no output during the test you've got a dead generator. Most often this is one or more worn brushes. Less often is an open field coil.
Thanks for the great info, ill dog in this weekend.
I also noticed the generator bracket arm is incorrect and touching the underside of the hood. Does anyone have an original arm bracket they would be willing to sell?
