About to put the car in the paint shop for a complete paint job. The guy is recommending that I take my KH’s and gold lines off and put on a really cheap set of wheels that I can basically throw away after. Couple questions: lug nut patter is 5x4.75, correct? Also, I’m located in Scottsdale, anyone have a cheap set they want to get rid off?

I would be " Very Hesitant " to have a shop paint my car while starting to make request before the job starts. I see RED FLAGS already. They never heard of wheel dust covers? Painters plastic shielding/tape? Are they this sloppy & careless in doing their work? A good paint shop will take the tires off and use jacks or carts to get the body higher off the ground during painting " if needed." What's next, take the engine out? The shop should supply all the necessary equipment to do any job.
I worked at a bump shop while in college, I still remember some of the good practices VS. getter done fast and make short cuts to save money.
As a body shop they are covering there end. I see nothing wrong with them asking to have those tires and wheels removed.
If you are paying the body shop to remove bumpers, bottom trim, mirror, windows trim, door handles, all glass, side vents, chrome emblems, both doors and hood. The tires are also part of this package. The shop is responsible for making these needed accommodations. Customer is paying for this service. The RED FLAG is waving in your face,

I agree. If it were my car, I wouldn't give the body shop any opportunity to screw up those wheels. I'd take responsibility for ensuring they don't get damaged, painted,... whatever.

no because the shop is not going to be removing wheels every time they need to move the car and have to worry about any damage to them.
No matter how you cover them they are going to get overspray and dust on em. Can't be helped unless you take em off. I am painting my 59 right now and overspray/dust gets everywhere.
If you’re talking about real KH knock-offs I would say your shop is giving you sage advice. Yes they’re covering themselves, but… real knockoffs are still worth 8-12 grand for a set of five, so if they are real, they’re doing you a favor.

This guy is really good. Has done several Barrett Jackson Top Auction cars and only does Corvettes. The Corvette that Kevin Hart paid $1M for at Barrett Jackson was painted by this guy. He is giving me a deal if I completely dechrome the car myself. He has done other cars for me so i trust him. Just need cheap wheels. Thank you-
