Right below the GM8 in the above picture is where I see what looks like two or three rows of threads poking out.
If I correctly understand what your are describing, the tube on the front bearing retainer is broken off. CORRECT??????
That tube is what the throwout bearing rides on.
Also, if the snap around the front of the bearing is pulled away from the front face of the case, that is NOT good.
Sooooooooooo, based on what you have described, THAT'S BAD!!!!
The front bearing retainer is a simple bolt-on replacement, but, the transmission has to be removed.
Last, I TOTALLY agree with contacting Larry Fischer with D&L Transmission. I have been doing my 4sp business with Larry for about 40yrs. NO ONE FINER to deal with. http://www.dandltransmission.com/
Silver Sport Transmission has quoted $4841.83 for everything to do A TKX swap, not exactly chump change.
River Side Gear advertises $2399.99 for A replacment Muncie with new guts.
I'm calling Paul as soon as he opens.
Its still an old used transmission
When I did my TKX I did not buy a " kit " and instead piecemealed mine together buying the parts I wanted...
Probably a new clutch involved in the kit price, but you could purchase the disc only if your clutlch is good?
Some mounts not needed etc......
I am actively searching for the cast iorn retainer if anyone has one those, this one is aluminum. The car is A 63 split window so it is the first design.
Early cars had T-10's . The retainers for them were the aluminum , right ?
I have a early Feb car with the T-10. I found a C/I retainer that came from a non corvette trans , but don't remember where .
That's what I suspected it had to be, based on your description. For sure, that would cause a major leak.
If it is a numbers matching Muncie for your car, I would invest in a proper rebuild. Otherwise, replace it with something of your choice. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, BEWARE OF THIS------------IF IT IS A 63 MUNCIE AND A 63 BELL HOUSING (421), ONLY, ONLY, ONLY A 63 MUNCIE AND 421 HOUSING ARE GOING TO MATE!!!!!
If you replace that Muncie with ANYTHING else, you will need to round up a 64-later 403 (or 383) bell housing.
By the way, if it is OK with you, I am going to save that picture to my file.
Wow, wonder what kind of condition caused that. Crazy. Not sure that could cause damage to the input as it’s supported by the bearing and the pilot bushing. Just replacing the retainer might get you back in business if the transmission has otherwise been shifting fine. DZAuto might comment on that.
Thanke to all. I tore down the transmission today and sent the case to Riverside Gear in Michigan to rebush the lower countershaft. Bob there, which was very helpful, said the front retainer was probably cracked by whoever installed the transmission recently. Also the thin nut on the input was loose. I just got the car in June and just now went after the oil leak. The retainer is made from very thin aluminum. Thankfully the gears and bearings all looked very good. I found A cast iorn retainer made for this small bearing retainer In AZ. also today,
JRvinintaggears@gmail.com. very reasonable man

Ok, so now I have sent the case sent off after I disassembled it to be bored and sleeve the countershaft hole. Found A cast iorn front retainer be here tomorrow. The front bearing that is right there with the destroyed retainer has checked out, no noise after I cleaned it, also the rest of the transmission looked very good, gears and syncyonisers show no abuse from grinding. The bearing, 207SLB Timken, seems ok. Since it is the small bearing that Muncie chose to get away from and it has been close to some rather heavy destruction, aluminum retainer, I am leaning on getting A new bearing. Seeing 60-80 dollars for A new one.
Definitely replace the front bearing. There will be fine metal particles in the bearing from the bearing retainer tube doing some spinning around. From the picture it does not like a clean break. There is some metal worn off of the tube. It had to go somewhere.
For those who want to stay with a Muncie Trans, there is another alternative to having your trans gone through. That's AutoGear Transmissions in New York.
With their beefed up case and new Italian Gears inside, a new M22W
Trans from them is also around $2400, shipping included. My 65 L78 had a nearly new TKO600 in it when I bought it back in 2019
and although I only drove it barely 30 miles before tearing it all apart, I felt the TKO was a bit too stiff so I sold it to a friend and ordered a new AutoGear Muncie.
I finally wrapped up the L78 overhaul and have a little more than 300 miles on it...and the trans and happy with the results.
Just another option.
