Default Engine Stands

I have been shopping on line for an engine stand. Seems like the prices very by a factor of up to 2:1. I never used one. Used to use a lift and home made wooden stands. Now I am getting older and lazier. Anybody have recommendations on a stand for SB and BB Chevy V-8s. Any features I should be looking for?

If I were to replace my 3 legged stand I'd get one with 4 legs and has a rotator bar at the back for turning the motor over when needed. :yesnod:

:iagree: Definitely make sure it has two wheels up front; otherwise they're kind of unstable when you take a long handled wrench to something like a bearing cap. Has anyone seen an engine stand where the wheels lock? I've always figured that would be handy.

:withstupid: Any new engine stand that I purchase will be the style with 4 wheels, no doubt about it. I have been in the ~unfortunate~ situation of having a 3 legged stand tip over on me (thank goodness that there was only a small block on it at the time :yesnod: ) Still a royal PITA when it tips over (assuming you are able to save your toes... :bb )

Crower injection service makes one you can weld together and we put complete engines including blowers on them. These are HEAVY DUTY strong enough to handle our fuel engines. Those break down cheap pieces are just that, they break down at the wrong time.

The choice of engine stand really depends on what you want to do with it. If you are rebuilding, painting your block, etc. then I would suggest, as others have, a 4 wheeled stand with a rotating shaft so you can flip the block over. However, on the majority of these you can't bolt your flywheel, bellhousing, etc. on because the stand uses holes at the rear of the block. Jegs has a nice stand that comes in 2 pieces that mounts to the motor mount areas on the side of the block, which allow you to bolt everything on your engine including the tranny. (my motor is currently on the Jegs stand). For simple storage purposes, many swap meets and tool vendors sell an inexpensive($30-$40 range) 4-wheeled stand that allows you to move the engine around easily.

One more thing to think about. I bought a cheap 4 wheel stand from Northern, it works great, is stable and a good value. The downside, the width of the front legs/wheels interferes with the hydraulic engine hoist (another cheapy from Northern). I simply can't get the engine and stand far enough under the hoist. Moving the engine from the stand to the hoist is a royal PITA. Do some careful measuring and save yourself some pain.

See ya,
John

Thanks for the info John W. I ran into a similar problem with an engine hoist I rented for use in mid -years. The boom was not long enought to get back over the center of the engine. When I bought my hoist I made sure the boom was long enough. Will check the width of the legs on the front of my new hoist and make sure they will fit around the engine stand before I buy it!

The four wheeler is the best choice....we are currently working on a 454 baby and without that it would be impossible...but take care...to flip the engine over you should have a long enough bar....otherwise it flips you....right into the next wall ! :D
