Gents, I am considering having the front grill rechromed; all of it. Even the egg carton section. Just seem easier than having repaint the middle section. Any thoughts one way or another? Anyone have done this before?

the correct way is to rechrome it then mask the chrome off and paint the center

Good idea. Not sure how visible it will be so low to the ground and under the bumper. Not sure the egg carton section can be buffed out. The egg carton section seems to fragile for a buffer.

Look into having spray chrome as an option. It will cover everything and does not need to be buffed out.

I can't believe a chrome shop would even take that on, it's potmetal and so very intricate. If they did, it'd likely be very expensive. I considered rechroming my '66 grill, and aiding the chrome shop by sanding the egg crate area down myself and letting them concentrate only on the perimeter and the facial area of the eggcrate which would allow me to correctly paint everything else. Never got a quote, but I did sand the eggcrate down as I just stated and it came out really nice. Not perfect, but very presentable.

I used a mini belt sander to tackle this which worked out very well.

The did say it would be very expensive for the very reasons you stated however, it is still less than buying a new one and its original and anything I buy will be a repo. That’s why I’m considering going that route.

I have a 67 & as far as I know repo's are still not being made. Mine was in better shape than any used ones I could find so I filed/sanded it, had it chromed & then masked & painted it. It came out awesome. I do not remember the cost as I had a bunch of chrome done at the same time. It sure ain't cheap.

chroming egg-crate style grills is very expensive and many shop won't do it. It involves making a jig with the electrodes positioned in just the right way.. If one slips in can ruin the chrome tank.
