I had my ammeter converted to a voltmeter years ago on my 63. Just finished my American auto wire install. I had tested along the way and everything was working. Now that i am done my voltmeter is not working. I measure voltage on the bolts on the back. But gauge not reading. I checked and it has a good ground. Thoughts????
It has worked for years
i tested a couple times during the install of the harness and it worked
i measured the voltage on the back. At the post and it measures correct. Gauge just won’t read

Define 'good ground'? One terminal on the voltmeter is connected to a 12V source and the other terminal is connected to ground... Al
I don't see a wire on the other gauge post. One for one side of the gauge, one for the other post on the gauge. The case doesn't need a ground on an aftermarket voltmeter. The way yours is connected (it looks like to me), nothing is flowing through the gauge winding, so no deflection.
Leave the ign off, connect a small square 9v battery (like used in a smoke detector) across the two upper posts and see if your gauge doesn't show 9v.
I can add a ground to the post. But it never had one. Look at the attached pic. It says that post is grounded through the dash. It worked during early test after i had it partially installed. The battery was always disconnected during circuit connections.
I will check it out this week. What post do i put the neg wire on? Pos is at 3:00. Neg at 9:00 or 6:00?
9, if you're sure the one on 3 is supposed to be positive. Did you get a wiring diagram with the gauge that told you which post was supposed to be connected positive?
Is one of the posts supposed to be connected to the light or does your voltage gauge not have a light? Or a light that comes on with the ignition? You should've gotten a diagram with the gauge.
I had this gauge rebuilt and installed about 15 years ago. And it has worked ever since. The issue came about when i finished installing my new American auto wire kit. This weekend

I may be looking at this wrong, but the picture appears to show only one wire - the dark red one - attached to a terminal on your voltmeter. Is that supposed to be a single wire application wiring?
I did fix it, but it was on accident. The positive wire goes to the mounting post, then that is a resistor that goes over to the positive post. the negative goes through the case. It has worked since I had it built. Not sure what happened, but was not reading at all. I got under the dash and checked voltage and it was good on both posts, the one with the wire and the other on the other side of the resistor. So I was going to wire to a nine volt battery just to check another way. Had the test wires connected to the post opposite of the wire connection and on the neg post. As I was about to hook up to batter, the other side of the test wires touched the door sill and shorted, this shocked the gauge and seemed to wake it up. it did not peg. has worked since.
