Default Steeroids Conversion

Hi all. I’m considering a Steeroids conversion on my 1962 and was wondering if anyone on the forum knows if the original steering column can be used in place of the column that comes with kit? My father bought the car, which needed a lot of work, in 1977 and I inherited the car 10 years ago and have been attempting to finish the restoration/ modification he started. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am sure you could use the factory column but would have to do quite a bit of work to make it work. Cut the tube and install a bearing on the bottom end. Cut and machine the shaft to the correct length for the tube and to accept a U joint. I used the Steeroids kit and the Ididit column was perfect. When installed you can't tell from inside that it isn't factory, well a rivet counter can tell, but most can't. Plus you get later model turn signal switch and hazard warning switch. I left my factory gearbox and column intact as it has some value and somebody could put it back if restoring the car. Just my two cents. Below are some pictures of the Ididit column in my 60.
This shows the hazard switch coming out the right side of the column. I painted it black.

This shows my modification to their turn lever. It looked like the hazard switch, I machined it down in the lathe and painted it ivory. it looks pretty stock. The later turn signal switch is a dream come true and it cancels very nicely.

On a later C1, such as your 62 (with the VIN plate welded to the column), it would be best to use the original column, and modify the lower half as needed.. Keep it looking "legal"..

There is enough room on the Ididit column to mount the vin tag and it looks plenty stock enough. Just say it it a shortened stock column. As long as the tag is the original and matches the frame you are golden. They were known to fall off so whatever holds it is OK.
Now that it is on the road I have a turn of electrical tape around it for security which can easily be removed for inspection.

I bought an old C1 steering box, rebuilt it then basically cut the column in half & put the EPS unit from an '07 Prius under the dash. Then added a quick steering adapter and it's like a different car. Just my 2 cents. I can't speak on a Steeroids conversion as I've never driven one.https://www.hotrod.com/articles/150-...rius-delivers/
