Default holley 4160 accelerator pump

would there be a route cause why the accelerator pump gasket on my Chevelle 4160 Holley carb has failed over the winter and for the second time in eight years since it was restored? or should I just replace it and move one? no other gasket in the carb has failed in that time. so now on this great weather day in central Pa I can't enjoy my car as no auto parts store keeps those gaskets in stock anymore.

Are you using the large volume accelerator housing with a standard volume diaphragm? Is the diaphragm failing or the gasket which is part of the diaphragm.
I have had leaks at the accelerator pump after long time storage but just tighten the screws and it seals back up. I assume you do have the split lockwasher on the screws.

its part of the diaphragm and its a pin hole leak as it squirting fuel past the rad support. the screws are recessed style with clutch head. I can't get to the screws due to the intake and would have to remove the fuel bowl or carb to get to them . its the oem style volume diaphragm.

Without a special screwdriver, I don't think you will be able to access them with the carburetor on the intake. Someone else may have a better answer.

the first time this happened I had to go buy a clutch head screwdriver bits to remove them. I was just more concerned if there is more to it then just replacing it or if I have a underlying problem. looking on summit I don't see them, but Holeys web site list two. since I don't know which one I need I'll call Phill who restored the carb on monday and I'll buy what I need from him, he is really good about this sort of stuff. I am just more frustrated that I can't enjoy my car today

Make sure the pump cover is flat when you change the diaphragm, broach it on something flat and try the pump again it may seal up.

Both of my Hollies presented accelerator pump leaks last season. Bit the bullet, pulled, cleaned and re-gasketed both carbs, new pumps. Both carbs hadn't had attention in 10 years so I guess that's all we can expect.

The diaphrams dry out and crack. It's just a fact of life. I keep em on stock and just replace em every spring or so..

joys of owning a restored car. They are never done. On a side note when I pulled the air cleaner off the gasket on top of the carb to the air cleaner crumbled in my hand. Knock on wood I don't find any more

I have NOS accelerator pump diaphragms and gasket that dried out and hardened in the never opened box. The life span certainly is not forever.

You made no mention of the ethanol content of the gasoline.
Try these for high ethanol.

Are you using more than 10 percent ethanol gasoline?
