Default alignment

I am getting ready to take my 66 in for an alignment. Two questions.
(1) Since radial tires are used what has the consensus been on the specs.
I see Vette Brakes has recommended specs. DAILY DRIVER, ADVANCED STREET. Has anyone used this on their car? Mine is strictly street driver.
(2)I have replaced everything in the front end including the control valve, cylinder, steering box. The rag is fine.(power steering) yet I still have some play at the steering wheel. Will the alignment correct this problem or should I look at something else?

No haven´t used it yet but plan to use the "Street" recommendations as well when "Diva" goes back on the road again. So I´m interested in comments as well.

Any combinations with tyres ??

Plan to use 205/75 or 215/70 whitewall....you only get Cooper or General over here in Germany....

....what is the recommendation ? :nopity

I am running 195/75 X 15 radials on my 65 coupe. It has been aligned to factory specs. It handles great at all speeds.

Is yours power steering? Mine is power steering. I had it set up about a month ago on the vette brakes specs. (advanced street) talk about squirrelly.
It has such a quick response you turn the steering wheel a little your in the next lane.It feels so light that you think you were driving on ice. I like a little more firmness. :auto:

You can move your tie rods to the rear holes on your steering knuckles. That will slow it down.

NO! Alignment will not eliminate play in your steering system. What have you not replaced? Idle arm, tie-rod ends, ball joints, etc

Have the shop use the specs for a 76 Corvette (all had radials), since they have the same frame mounts. It works for me - 15 years and cruising. :auto:

Everything has been replaced. All balljoints, gear box, shocks, springs, idler arm, cylinder, control valve, rag is ok. I spoke to VBP today and they told me there are 2 springs used in the control valve. a 40# and a 55#. If you do not specify a 55# you will get a 40#. The difference I am told is the 55# makes the steering a little stiffer. The 40# are being used now to make the steering easier to turn. If I can get rid of the small amount of play in the steering wheel I can live with the quick responce.
Thanks to all who has responded. Two heads are better than one.

Did you check your steering column bearings? What may feel like play could be slop in the column from bad bearings. (I had to replace mine for that reason).
Shoot me an email, will ya, Podna?

The lighter spring was used in ChevIIs/Novas, the heavy one in Covette - according to the GM repair manual. :chevy

That is what I thought also. I replaced the upper and lower bearing. I will recheck this weekend to make sure the bearings are tight in place.
Thanks, :smash:

Thanks for the info. I spoke to VB and they said it should not matter. What will be the difference in the 2 springs? Harder to steer? Holds line straight more? Since I have a new rebuilt VB control valve I am just trying to deside whether to send it back and having a stronger spring put in it.
What do you all think?

I did not read if you took the play out of the steering box. The is the center bolt in the steering box. When properly tightened, you should have almost no play in the rag joint.

I second Gordy M. - look at the steering box. Try to adjust it at the Pitman shaft but the best bet is to spend a couple hundred for rebuilding the box. It made a lot of difference on mine. :flag

I had the box rebuilt by VB 2 weeks ago. I have determined my play is in the control valve and it was also replaced and used VB. I was at the Houston car show this weekend and spoke to VB. They told me when the car is not running there will be play in the wheel. When the car is running the play should be gone. That is not the case here. It is still there. I am wondering if there is air in the system. There is no info. found and no one as an idea how to check or get it out. They say just keep driving it.

On the alignment issue I spoke to a corvette repair shop and they said they set all of their old vettes to stock settings. They feel the radial tires will work fine.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the info. I too have pb, a/c, ps, 350 eng. 215/65/r15 I set mine up originally with VB but the next step up from the daily driver. I think I should have stayed on the daily driver set up.
