I have this posted in C3 as well as it pertains to my 72, but I’m sure you folks also have the same dilemma so I’m appealing to this audience as well. I replaced the fuel pump on my base 350 a year and a half ago and it again **** the bed today. What are you guys using in the way of decent replacement pumps? Looks like everything is sourced from overseas and this crap just doesn’t last. I had the original pump on my 67 L71 rebuilt by Fred out in California and so far so good with it. Thanks in advance for suggestions.
I am in the same boat, looking for advice on what is a GOOD replacement fuel pump these days.......
We have a '66 L72 427, and I put a Carter fuel pump on it 5 or 6 years ago..... it appears to be developing an issue where it does not provide enough fuel pressure to start the car, but then makes enough when it is running to keep the car running......
I spoke with a very good friend who owns an auto repair business that specializes in older cars, and he said they started seeing it just after the pandemic, cars coming in with fuel pump issues...... he said it has been a crap shoot with out of the box fuel pumps, and he specifically mentioned Carter pumps..... he said out of the box, some have low fuel pressure, but most are way too high..... they are ending up having to put in fuel regulators to deal with the high fuel pressure.......
66 L79 fuel pump packed it in last Fall. Research strongly pointed to Aurther Gould Rebuilders (AGRebuilders.com). They have refurbished units or will rebuild yours to a high level of proficiency. For an extra fee they can do it to NCRS standards. I bought one of their standard refurbished units per the L79 spec. Coming up on 2,000 miles this year, no issues.
Rebuilding a fuel pump is not rocket science.
That said, the kits are getting hard to find.... and not cheap ($80+)
I replaced the in carb filter with the filter with the check valve and so far, even waiting 1-2 hours it starts right up! I can’t believe that was it! I also spoke to RobbMC regarding my fuel pump issue and have ordered the correct 3 port pump. He said it will also help to avoid vapor lock and hard starting issues.
It is the gas we have today especially in California with all of the additives. It will eat rubber and make it a mushy mess. Don't let the gas sit use stabil or drain the tank and run it until it is dry and cuts out.
