Default Differential disassembly

Pulled apart the dif to find the caps on backwards and the left shim working its way out. No marks on caps so im going to have to assume that they are even on the right sides. The pinion splines were covered in silicone. Maybe they thought gear oil would get past the splines?

It’s common to put a small amount of RTV on the pinion splines before installing the u-joint flange and pinion nut for exactly that reason - to prevent gear oil from migrating up the splines and dripping out at the front. A small amount.

I guessing that you pulled it out and apart for some reason. What was it doing that compelled you to dive into it?

The caps appear backwards in the picture, they may be mixed up from previous workers. They should be checked for correct fit on the race to be used. That is a narrow case, the shims required are not sold in any kits I know of today. GM obsoleted those shims years ago. The case preload is too loose if the shim is coming up. The left shim typically would show this.
That looks like a 4 series case, is it? it is also the first design Eaton posi case which are very prone to cracking. You need to look very close for cracks as if there are any found the posi case should be replaced. If it is a 4 series gear, the pinion should be checked to see what type was used, there were carry overs from earlier cars that had issues.

I'm rebuilding the trailing arms which had trashed spindles and bearings so I pulled the dif out to replace the leaky seals. Figured I'd replace the bearings while it's apart. It has 3.36 gears that show no obvious damage. Backlash is almost 10 thousandths. Already bought timken bearings so they're going in even though old ones look fine.

Thanks for confirming which series. The flange almost looked a little thicker. Check the case for cracks.
