Default muncie shifter

I am fairly sure sometime in 66 they went from a tail shaft mounted to a frame mounted shifter. if this is true what is the roundabout date this happened. second are the shifter bodies the same?

There's a TSB #66-65 dated June 13, 1966. "All Corvettes produced after the date 3-21-66 are equipped with the crossmember mounted gear shift control assembly"

No mention of any change to the shifter itself.

That late into the year. So it would be safe to say a car built late Dec early Jan would have a tail shaft mounted shifter.

I think the '64-'67 shifters are the same units; they just mount to different places. If you compare, say a '65 to a '67, they have the same mounting holes.

The shifter is the same for all 64-67, whether it mounts to the trans or the frame. According to the Parts and Illustration Catalog, most of the shifter parts are all the same part numbers from 64 thru 81, and the frame mounting bracket is only applicable for 66 & 67.

Not quite the same. One difference is in the alignment reference on the levers. I don't know the date of the change on this but the pic below shows it clearly. The earlier style (which my '64 came with) only has a small dimple on the right as seen below - lining them up with a rod or dowel would give the desired spacing. Later ones ('66 shown on left) also have rectangular notches. When in proper position, a gauge or tool can be inserted in all the slots to hold this in place while adjusting the rods.

Does anyone have picture of a frame mounted shifter set up. My car was born May 16th, 1966, I think it has a tail housing mounted shifter.

Here's a few shots of mine, the removable crossmember is obviously out of the car. The chassis was made prior to the production change, but the bracket has been added per the GM bulletin instructions.

Don't know if this will help much, but it's the only one I have.

I will say that I like my '67's frame mounted shifter. There was no need to do anything other than disconnect the rods from the shift levers to remove the transmission earlier this summer.
