I have a time tomorrow to see it. Maybe the underside is all rot, needs a frame, ??? don't know
Just looking for thoughts if you had a chance to buy, would you ??. Asking $45,000, I think one could come out ok, or be knee deep.
Needing a frame is not a big deal, finding a frame is a bigger deal. Cost aside the only thing that would be a show stopper is birdcage rust, if it has it walk away. Not talking surface rust, were talking holes in the metal rust and if you don't know how to inspect for that hire someone who can.
All that aside IF you do all the restoration work yourself (every nut & bolt), restore to new every component, every interior panel etc. it will cost you $30-50K plus a paint job ($25K). If you pay $45K you will have $100K in it real quick if your intentions are to restore it. If the car is complete and not a rust bucket I would get it running and drive it as-is.
Been out of the C2 game a few years now but am amazed at what people are asking for these cars.
I agree with Mr. D, you can drop $100K in this project really quick. If you are going to restore or resto mod the car will make a huge difference in time and money for the project. It has been my experience to buy a completed car and put your touches on it. In the long run you will save a lot of money and still have a great car without the pocketbook pain.
Daytona Blue 64 with Dark Blue/White guts is very nice. Low hp, not so nice, and yes, frame is easily replaceable, birdcage is another story all together.. I would run the other direction.. Let someone else do the deep dive that poor car needs..
if the frame and birdcage are ok, get a CC or Zip catalog, check off everything listed for '64, add a (possible) engine rebuild and a paint job. if this doesn't scare you, go for it. three years ago I started with a $38k driver that pretty much needed everything. I'm in it north of $68k driving it every chance I get and loving every moment of it.
The birdcage looks like it could be rusting out just from that picture. I would ask to take the trim off to get a good look if you are going to look at it.
Run! Coupe birdcage rust is the death knoll. You can find a nice, rust free version for another $10-20k. This one will cost you much more than that in money, time, and aggravation.
