66 l79 coupe. Motor turns over but doesn’t start. Went to bulkhead connectors pushed and wiggled. Engine fires runs poorly dies. Restart , same thing. Limp it to shop.pull the bulkhead connectors off inboard bottom right pin is corroded but not bad. Outboardtop 2 on right pins are bent over toward outside. Cleaned with brake kleen and stainless brush. Put some dielectric compound on and put back together. Now for the red wire. Going to go from horn relay to hot side of headlight rollover breaker. My horn relay has ground, plug with 2 wires and a red wire and small gage wire. Red wire is on one of the screws on relay the other screw doesn’t have anything attached. PO switched alternator to 1 wire, ran a large gage wire from positive on battery to alternator and red wire on same lug leaving alternator that wire has continuity to red wire on horn relay and red wire on inboard bulkhead connector now for questions. Shouldn’t there be wires on both sides of horn relay? And where should I pick up hot to go to headlight rollover breaker.
The buss with the red wires has a bar between the two screws. Unless you have A/C, one of the screws won't have a wire on it usually. Not sure of your question, but with your modifications with alternator, I'd be surprised if your battery gauge works. There is a small black/white stripe wire that attaches to the red wire on the horn relay for the gauge. What you're calling a ground wire on the horn relay may be the black wire that goes to the steering column to honk the horn relay. The green wire in that connector goes to the horns up front. The true ground wire on the horn relay goes to a screw on the side of the base of the relay. I'd have to see a picture (and not a zoomed in picture) of your horn relay wiring to fully understand what you have. The red arrow shows where no wire is connected without a/c, mine has a/c so there is an extra red wire, but it is the same connection electrically because the metal buss connects the two screws together.
Alright got it .didn’t realize there is a bar between the 2 screws. So I can go from unused screw ( don’t have a/c) to hot side of headlight rollover breaker. Yes I have the black/ white stripe wire on same screw as red wire and battery gage works. And yes I have the 66 diagram. Thanks for quick reply!
The other red wire that you already have goes through the bulkhead connector and then splits and attaches to the rollover breaker, fuse panel, headlight switch, lighter, power antenna connector, so you already have a red wire connection. Are you wanting to bypass the bulkhead connector and that is the reason for this question? If so, then yes, a wire from the extra screw to the rollover circuit breaker would accomplish that. Connect the new wire to the INPUT side of the rollover circuit breaker (the side that goes to the horn relay and not to the side of the breaker that goes to the headlight rollover switch) so that the circuit breaker is left in line to protect against a short in the headlight motor circuit.
'66 model year with red wire bypass from horn relay bus bar to h/lamp rollover cb. My application is with p/glide -- I routed the bypass conductor through the firewall grommet at speedo cable entry. (Heat-shrink ring terminals at both ends).
