I want to remove the gauges from my '58 and have them refurbished. Anybody know the secret to removing the gauges in some systematic approach? The manual I have basically says "...disconnect wires and remove gauges...". I know there must be some mounting bolts for the enclosure, but haven't a clue as to where they are. Any help??

Well I'm gonna try to get the speedometer out when it gets warm enough to go out in the garage. I think I have to move the steering colum down for this to come out. I have had my guages out before and don't remember haveing to move the stering so I guess just disconnect the battery, mark or take a picture of your wires, or just look at a manual. I hope you have some small tools, 1/4 inch drive or ignition wrenches. The wires will be hard and brittle. I'll be removing my ammeter guage to put a new face on it and be replacing all the clear lenses while I'm there. It will be so different to me to see the speedometer woking. It has not worked in the 17 years I've had the car and my fathers never worked either so I've never seen the needle move on a C1 speedo.
My speedo actually did work until the needle fell off. Actually all the gauges work, but need to be restored (color, chrome, scratches). Just need help in figuring out how to remove the mounting bolts that I can't see.
There are five bolts holding the cluster with 3/8" heads. If the cluster has been out before there may only be four, since one is under a bracket and is hard to get to. I usually remove the steering wheel for extra access, but it isn't necessary. You will need to remove the light switch and the wiper switch and disconnect the oil pressure line with a 5/16" wrench. A 3/8" nut driver wit a flexible shaft would be very helpful. On eassembly there is a good picture in the ST12 as to where everthing goes, as well as a wiring diagram. On the diagram, the ammeter wires are shown in reverse. The ammeter will read backwards unless you reverse them. The rest of it is really pretty simple. You can mark the wires if you wish, but it's a lot less trouble to simply refer to the wiring daigram. It takes me about 15 minuets to get a C1 cluster out and about 30 minuets to reinstall.
Look around the outer edge of the cluster from underneath. There is a groove in the fiberglass that all the bolts are located in. Just follow it around.
