oill Capacity - '67 Big Block
In checking my books, it says that I should have a 6 quart oil capacity. Changing my oil a while back, I noticed that when I did an oil & filter change, adding the 6th quart brought me over the full line (significantly).
When I purchased the car it had a chrome dipstick. I just recently replaced the dipstick with an original style from ZIP. And the oil level is STIll high.
Anybody have an L-68 (or other BB) with a 5 quart pan?
Thanks! :mad

Some years ago, the oil level on my dipstick started reading high after an oil change (6 quarts with filter change). I figured that the tube in the side of the oil pan that the dipstick goes through must have gotten pushed into the pan farther. I filed a new full mark on the dipstick. Some day, I may fix the root cause.

Mine holds 6 quarts. 1967 L36. In about 2-3 months, it will hold almost another 1/2 quart to make up for what leaked on the garage floor. I'm gonna find that damn drip someday :D

The big/ block mid years oil pan is 5 quarts with filter change add 1 quart= 6. when using the standard GM filter. The 373 big/ block #373 truck filter is 2 quart capacity bringing it to 7 quart capacity. referenced 1966 owners booklet that reflects the 6 quart capacity. I have been using the 373 filter for the extra capacity on my 427. :seeya

It's pretty common to have had the pan changed sometime in the past, and a 4-quart pan put on in place of the 5-quart, which is what your car came with.
Another problem is that there are about 7 different dip-sticks that go with various years of Big Blocks, some with different marks for FULL level. The 5-quart pan is "longer" in the reservoir by about 2-3 inches.

I just discovered that the left exhaust manifold on my car is from a 454. Could be a cracked manifold replacement... but, does anybody know the oil capacity on a 454 engine?
My Winter project seems to be taking more places than I planned on going!

No problem Dave. I've been doing it for close to 50 years. You won't get a full quart in, but almost.

Nice looking '67!
By the way, next time start a new thread, the powers that be go apeshit when somebody digs up an old one.
