Default Artificial Intelligence not so intelligent

I put my car’s vin number, trim tag, and engine numbers into ChatGPT and it informed me that my car is:

A coupe
Sunfire Yellow
Black seats
Black top
Numbers matching L79 engine

The original engine is correct but my car is an Ermine White convertible with teal seats and teal blue top.

... but it did so with great confidence. The real question is why was it lying to you. Have you seen any black drones disguised as black helicopters circling your house? ... and how do we not know that it's right and it was you who swapped the VIN?

AI is just lik the old cliche about computers - GI, GO. The quality of the output depends on the quality of the input data source .

Fascinating stats from the horse's mouth:

Google's key findings on the accuracy of Gemini (as of April 2026):
  • Error Rate: With over 5 trillion searches each year, roughly 9% are incorrect, potentially leading to 225 billion inaccurate summaries annually.
  • Daily Misinformation: Hundreds of millions of incorrect AI-generated answers are provided daily.
  • Lack of Source Grounding: Approximately 56% of correct AI answers in one study lacked proper source grounding. This means the AI provided correct information but did not cite credible sources, or the sources did not support the claims.
  • Common Mistakes: Gemini has fabricated information, including dangerous advice and incorrect historical or technical advice.
  • Fixing Inaccuracies: Google is reportedly struggling to permanently fix these inaccuracies, addressing them on a case-by-case basis

You'd probably need to tell it each component of the vin and what each means and then maybe it could figure it out so long as there are sources of interpreting the VIN on the web.

Periodically, you have to ask AI if it is hallucinating. It does and it will tell you.

I once asked it if it ever made mistakes. It said that it does.

What’s funny is that I gave it the VIN (194677S12****) and it told me it’s a coupe.

I have been using ChatGPT as an interior decorating consultant for a house I am working on and the results have been remarkably good. For things like that I have found it to be excellent.

The more technical the subject, however, the more carefully you have to vet the answers.

I agree. I use ChatGPT all the time. I just wanted to point out that AI might not be the best resource for researching our cars.

Speaking as one who's done his share of stupid things, I'd be pleased if all of the resources that are being expended on the development of AI could instead be directed toward eliminating natural stupidity.

Live well,
