Noise from Speedometer
Question…noise rattling sound at about 35mph and 45 mph…noise goes away in between speeds…is it the speedometer cable or the speedometer itself? Any way to tell? Any experienced easy fixes? Thanks for any direction or experience with similar issue…sorry 66 corvette roadster over life long 100k miles…

Disconnect the cable at the speedometer but make sure the cable itself is pushed back in the housing until it contacts the thrust washer. Take him for a spin and see if you still hear the sound. If so then it's the cable then if not it's PROBABLY the speedometer itself but disconnecting the cable doesn't quite give you a definite answer if it's not driving the speedometer and yet making no sound. I would at least pull the cable out of its housing from the top and inspect it and clean it. You can clean the housing by disconnecting at both ends and spraying carb cleaner down the housing. You can lubricate the cable with something like vaseline but the best I've found since AC no longer makes the lubricant is a product called Kable-Ease which contains graphite in suspension. If you see any fraying of the cable, replace him.

If the needle is not going bonkers, it's the cable inside the casing most likley. You will need to pull the cluster just enough to reach the head end, The cable should come out and you will most likely see gunk comimg with it. That is what will cause the rattling. Use the search feature for FAQ on the subject for more guidence.
