The frame rails are very strong, and you can put stands just about anywhere, but just ahead of the kickup in the rear and just before the rails curve in at the front are where I place them. My SWC has a solid mounted body and there's little flex. I have heard that convertibles can show noticeable flex, but they might have weakened framed due to corrosion.
I also have no problem jacking the whole side of my SWC at the intersection of the frame rail and center cross member.
I would agree with SWCDUKE. I have had my 66 Coupe on jackstands, placed as he noted, for months at a time with no noticeble changes in door gaps, etc. Make sure you have good, stable jackstands and are on a fairly level, solid surface.
I can attest that those locations WILL show frame flex with a convertible, even low milage C3 ones.
Coupes with full roll cages will not flex, in fact you will need to shim the jackstands so all 4 are absolutly level or the car will rock on two of them.
Be carefull if your plans include removing the rear end and fuel tank, as the remaining weight on the rear jack stands will go negative.
A fith jack stand under the front crossmember is a good safety precaution.
tuxedo, another tip on jacking, especially a convert. I always open my dorrs just past the latching point. Convert will flex due to no upper body structure as a coupe has. :cheers:

I agree with Duke on the stand locations and, for me, it was during one of those times I had my 66 coupe on jackstands that one jackstand started to "sink" into the frame rail. That was my hint that it was time to start my frame off resto of the chassis... :eek:
coupes are much more ridged than vert's. i remember, when i was a 17 year old kid working at the local chev dealer changing oil....... i'd put vert's on the hoist and the doors wouldn't open or close correctly (if at all)
I placed the jack stand's on the frame rails where you guys had suggested. Everything went very well. I am glad you mentioned to open the doors, because the vert definitely flexes when up on the stands. Thx :hurray:
At the risk of stirring up a controversy, I still feel better jacking the front of my car up at the lower control arms (2 small 2-ton floor jacks at once) to avoid all of that engine weight cantilivered out over the factory front jack location point. It's a pain if I need to get under the car as I have to place everything carefully to be able to get jackstands in there beside the jacks. I guess for a short period it wouldn't matter but I wouldn't want to leave it up on jacks at the factory location for an extended period. :flag
I guess an alternative is to jack the front at the lower control arms and then lower it to just barely touching stands under the frame at the factory points and keep pressure on the jacks to carry the weight of the front end. Should make things less stessful (as in stress cracks) for you convertible owners.
