I have something very peculiar going on with the brakes in my '65. When I get in the car first thing in the morning and put my foot on the brake, the pedal will go down almost to the floor. When I release it and press it again there is plenty of pedal pressure and I can drive it without the problem recurring.
The brake fluid level is OK and there do not appear to be any loose fittings or lines in the system.
Does anyone have any ideas on what's going on here?
I have power brakes and had a similar problem. Turned out my seal at the hose/booster connection was not real good. Ended up with a new hose and some rubber seal on the connection. No problem since. I don't know a good way to test this other than hit and miss.
Probably the master cylinder. When you park it over night the pressure bleeds past the plunger but once you have pumped it up once it is fine. I have had this happen twice on other cars and it was the master cylinder both times. Probably a small score on the cylinder wall or a small defect on the rubber piece on the plunger.
Best to be safe and rebuild the master cylinder, not a tough job when you consider the safety factor.
Did the power brake option on the 65 have a dual master? I know my 66 with power brakes has a dual master. Just curious.
Yup, '65 with power brakes used the same master cylinder as '66 power brakes, except the fittings were 3/16" on the '65 vs. 1/4" on the '66. If you have a spare, consider it part of your 401(k) :jester
