I'm running a orig. dist that I had Lars R&R last year when I rebuilt the engine and about everything else mechanical. My question is can I replace the coil with something from the local speed shop as mine is antient. Or do I need a direct replacement because of the particulars on my basically stock but warmed over sm .block '66' ? I'm not worried about correctness. I think I have a condencer and the porcelien block on the firewall. Thanks
Bruce
I assume you're saying your coil is "ancient". So what!!! As long as it functions okay, there is no need to replace it. If it's the original 202 coil, you can run the static resistance and isolation checks with an ohmmeter and check against the Chassis Service Manual specs, and if it is in spec, it doesn't need to be replaced.
If the coil is out of spec, just buy a generic Echlin replacement coil from NAPA or a Borg Warner from Pep Boys. I wouldn't waste money on a "hot rod" coil from a speed shop. They're just hype, but I sure would recommend you buy a '66 Chassis Service Manual if you don't have one.
Also suggest measuring your the ballast resistor with a digital ohmeter. It should be about 1.8 ohms at room temp.
Thanks for the help Duke
The one I have is an old Blue Streak with a threaded top where coil wire goes on, Which seems a little mickey mouse to me and its kind of beat up,it makes me think it was thrown on there for lack of the correct one at some point in time. However I can make out the word resistor on it ,is that a requirement?
Thanks , Bruce
Thanks Guys
I think I might just throw a quick coat of paint on it,being **** like I am.
As the problem is really only cosmetic.Everything else under the hood is either new ,rebuilt or detailed. I'll have to post some photos as soon as I figure out how with my new dig. camera. The problem is I spend all my spare time in my garage.
Thanks again , Bruce
