Default head casting numbers?

What is the significance of the GM number (the 7 and 16) on my heads? Right side GM7 3782461, date A 5 6 .. Left side GM16 3890462, date D 11 6.

Don't know about the GM 7 and 16, but you have a set of mis-matched heads. Should be the same casting number, and dates within about a month of each other.

The GM7 and GM12 are the mold numbers. With high volume parts, GM had multiple sets of tooling, and you see this type of designation on most cast parts.

Mis-matched heads, yes. A few people have clued me in. Here's the big question. Can I run them? Are they similiar enough? If I have them ported can they be made equal?

The 3782461 shows to fit 62-70 307-327-350 engines, manufactured Jan 5, 1966 ... I can't find the cross for the other casting. You would have to make sure that the combustion chambers are the same and obviously the valve sizes (which can be made the same) I will check a couple of other sources on the other casting number but so far I am drawing blanks!

The 0490 head, according to my book, was used on the early Z28 Camaros and '64-68 lower horsepower 327s and 350s with either 1.94 or 2.02 valves. The problem I see is that the 2461 head has 62.1 cc chambers and the 0490 head has 63.3 cc chambers.
