Default Windshield installed in '63

This past weekend a friend and I put a new windshield into the '63.

It wasn't too bad.
I'm glad that I did it.
I don't want to do it again for at least another ten years.
The windshield is in, but all of the trim is not. It needs to be cleaned and two of the moulding clips have some rust that needs to be treated. It took about one hour to remove the trim and old windshield and about thirty minutes to set in the new one. This doesn't include cleaning the goop and caulking that someone had done on the previous replacement window. Also, we drank beer and paused frequently to run our yappers about the windshield and solving world problems. We are much more mature than youths and know how to operate under the influence. We installed the new windshield with heavy nylon twine in the frame slot of the rubber stripping; and pulled it out to pull the stripping over the frame while pressing the windshield in. It was very nerve racking to press on the windshield like that, but it didn't crack. I have decided to not apply any sealer since it looks like it would create a dam at the bottom and trap water coming from the top. I can take the leaks that may happen since I know that the water draining is not sitting around the frame. There is one odd thing that does cause a little concern. The windshield sits very tightly in the frame from top to bottom. But, from side to side, there is about a 1/8" of play in the rubber between the glass and metal on both sides.

Default Re: Windshield installed in '63 (stngry63)

Brian,

Thanks for the input. I will be installing my windshield in my '63 coupe this weekend. I did the two back windows a while ago. They were very easy to do and so I thought to myself, "how could the front be any harder?". Well, after seeing all of the responses to your first post on this subject, I have to admit, I was hesitant to do it. But, I will go ahead and do it because I am trying to do as much myself as I can.

Do you have any pictures of the process?

Thanks for the inspiration!

I've never put one of these in myself, but I BET you are going to have water pouring in if you don't after seal the windshield with caulk as described in the '63 shop manual.

You might want to water test it with a hose before you put the moulding back on.

Mike
