I use a Sears Engine Analyzer, which includes a dwell meter and can do other tests as well. IF I remember right it cost maybe $40 on sale last year. It replaced a 70s vintage Sears engine analyzer that I got from my uncle. Its a nice little tool.
I'm still using the one I bought in 1968 at Penney's ("Foremost" brand) - solid die-cast chrome-plated hand-held unit, big square meter dial, hi-lo switched tach, works on 6's and 8's, dwell-tach switch, heavy-duty cord and clamps - they don't make 'em like that any more. When it dies, I'll be asking the same question
Go to http://www.actron.com and type in "dwell" in the search box, and you'll see several types of tach/dwell meters - one $40.00 meter is on sale right now for $12.00.
Believe it or not I still have my Sears Engine Analyzer Dwell since the late 60's or early 70's and it still works fine. You could purchase a dwell meter at Sears or any parts store and it will do just about the same thing. Your basically going to use it just for the tach and to dwell the points in anyway.
I still have the "Dixson, Inc." tach/dwell tester that I bought - probably a good 35 years ago, so it must be a good one, and I highly recommend it. ;)
I just bought my third timing light late last year - a Sears/Acton dial back. I don't know how I got by all those years without a dial back. No more little pieces of tape and paint marks on the balancer to determine and tune my ignition advance map. :)
