Clunk !
I have a definate CLUNK when I first put the car in gear and release the clutch. The U-joints seem fine on the half shafts . I havent checked the drive shaft U-joints yet . Probable that this is the cause or is there something else I might be overlooking ??

Guess you talk about a C2 ???
Well, the driveshaft can cause that as well as there is an option that the clutch is not to well aligned and the CLUNK is caused by the transmission.
Any other indication where the CLUNK comes from....how did the 1st gear slip in...soft or rather strong...how did it feel ?

Is it a metalic CLANK or a Mutted CLUNK? It also may be your front differential mounting cushion that's loose or worn out. Or the ring/pinion too loose. Does the differential also whine?
