I had one on sitting on a motorcycle seat and it got hot enough to melt the seat. May have been because the battery was dead. My friends all use them but I never will again.

HFT? Does that translate to Harbor Freight? If so....I had one that worked fine with a regular lead-acid battery, but wouldn't work with an Optima. Took it back and tried another, same result. Went to Walmart and got one of theirs (made by Shumacher, I believe) for just over $20, and it worked great with everything. So I got two more. (Too many cars/projects sleeping in the garage!!)

I used them Winter '09/'10 and '10/'11 on the '62 and the '57 Lincoln with no problems. Can't use on the '50 Olds (6 volt) & am too cheap to pay ~$20 Instructions DO say to hook it up to a fully-charged battery. I buy them at Harbor Freight when they're "on sale" w/coupon for $3.99 + get a FREE flashlight w/coupon, then I give them to "gear-head" buds on their B/D instead of a birthday card.

Melting Slicks
I have one and never use it. I just disconnect the battery for storage. If you need it when you are driving the car regularly (why I bought mine) you'll eventually discover that there is something wrong with the car causing the battery to drain. Mine was a bad diode in the alternator... I fixed that and haven't touched the tender since.

Advance Auto has tenders (not the name brand) for about $35 each. I have those as well as Battery Tenders on the cars. Both do the same IMO only the parts store is less expensive.
