Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (RichF)
I don't have it on my Vette, that has a full Crane electronic ignition, but I have the Pertronix on two other early SB Chevys and a BMW. I have absolutely no complaints at all, they've all been humming along just fine.
Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (RichF)
Well mine crapped out at the Wine Country Classic last weekend. I found out troubleshooting, by switching it out for my other ignition, which also has a Pertonix set up??? It had a month of street driving before I got there.
Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (RichF)
I had the Pertronix Ignitor 1181LSC in my 64 for three years with no problems. Improvement over the points set up. I changed it over to the newer Pertronix II a couple of months ago but haven't driven it enough to get a feel . I've got a Pertronix 1186LSC that I'm going to install in my 56.
I'm happy with them. I do use the matching Pertronix Flamethrower coils and their 7mm plug wires. Joe
Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (RichF)
Put in my 56 last summer with the flame thrower coil and have had no problems what so ever. takes about 10 min. to install and no adjusments just drop in and go!!!! CAr runs just fine
Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (RichF)
Rich, I run the Pertronix on my 66 coupe and have for a couple of years (my 66 bb conv is running the stock TI system). Very happy with it, definitely improved the idle characteristics. If you switch, be sure your coil is high enough impedance (I believe they recommend greater that 1.5 ohms).
Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (RichF)
Before switching to an MSD distributor a couple years ago, I ran a Pertronix for about 5 years and was very satisfied with it. If my stock, but non-original, distributor hadn't needed repair, I'd probably still be running the Pertronix.
Re: Experiences with 'PerTronix Ignitor' ? (Denney)
I have the Pertronics Ignitor in my 65 SHP 365 (3 years). The above post is correct; you must pair it with a coil that has at least 1.5 ohms of resistance. Also you should by-pass the ballast resistor, hence allowing field voltage to the coil. I noticed a 100 RPM increase in idle after the install. My vette starts awesome. One tap to set the choke and as soon as the starter engages it fires off. As far as driving my vette pulls very strong with no hick-ups to 7000 RPM. With the points it would fade around 5800 RPM and taper off around 6200 RPM. I guess a good rev-limiter.
I had a coil burn out last summer and I am not sure if it was a defective coil or the Pertronics. Accell warantied the coil so I was back in business hours latter. I keep a spare in the back.
Duke as well as others (62 fullie) have great success with the heavy breaker tension points coupled with a good distributor map. They have good results to these extreme RPM’s as well.
Lars mentioned something about the Pertronics changing the dwell in some fashion and I would be interested to learn more on this theory. Lars you out there?

An after thought. For the C1 guys with non tack drive distributors I have found that a reman dist. is not that expensive. If numbers is not a huge deal to you. My freinds 58 had a badly worn dist. and we bought a reman for around $40.00 (kept the old one). We added the pertronics module at install ($60.00). So, for $100.00 frog skins we had a new unit with electronic ignition. I sugested the points would be just fine for his 58 low HP 283, but he was sold on the low maint. appeal of the Ignitor. He has claimed of easier starts and better idle quality.
