Dose anyone have a good idea of how this cam compares to any of the stock cams? I inherited one with my 327/360 and curious how it compares to the stock cam or something like a "151" cam. Obviously this one is hydraulic, but just wondering how it compares otherwise.
The 280 cam has about the best idle lope I've ever heard in a street car. We installed it in my buddy's 71 Chevelle SS 454. With Flowmasters it's enough to convince you big blocks are better than women. It is MUCH more aggressive than the 151 cam in my L-79.
I ran a 280H in a 327 with midly ported 462 castings and 2.02 valves. It was terrible with my 3.08 rear gear and good with a 3.70. It had a strong lope at idle and the engine really didn't run well until 2,000 rpm. Keeping the rpm above 2,000 in traffic was a headache. The cam started to come on strong at 3,000 rpm and hit with a sudden wallop at 4,000 that lasted until 7,000. The cam was fun but not good at all for any kind of city stop and go traffic. Since I drive in town quite a bit, I won't get the cam again.
Well, that makes me wonder if it's actually a 280. In my car there is a lot of lope at idle, but I have no real problem with the engine pulling from down near idle speed. I have a 3.55. rear gear. Certainly no problem to drive in traffic.

From what you've said, it sounds to me like you probably do have a 280H. The same cam in a heavier car and/or with taller gears would feel slugish at lower rpm but could be just fine in other combos. Cars with close ratio trannies would also feel less responsive off idle.
Well, assuming it is a 280, which is what the machine shop records indicate, can anyone compare it to a stock 327/360 cam? When I say compare, I'm refering to idle quality, torque, RPM range, horsepower potential, etc.
I ran an M-21 trans. It of course was close ratio with a 2.20 first gear. So your suggestion on why my car was sluggish may be correct. I've driven a 327/350 C2 that was stronger off the line but don't know the gearing of car. The 280H made a whole lot more power top end. Since day to day driving and autocrossing are the '63's main uses, I need more low end grunt.
The 151 probably does have more low end grunt. I have a 151 "on the shelf" that I have been considering installing. The car runs fine now, and I tend not to fix things that "ain't broke". The present cam puts out just barely enough idle vacuum to operate the fuel injection properly, but it is enough. If I have some other ocassion to get into the motor I'll probably change it.
