Can anyone out there help with a 65 speedometer cable. I bought car which is very nicely restored recently. Drove it 500 miles home, and 2 miles short of home, the speedometer just quit. Prior owner said that the cable can come loose from time to time and has in the past. Gauge itself should be good as it is new.
Can anyone help me with how to fix it? Where to start? etc...
Well the first thing I would do is to make sure the ends of the cable are secured. I would check the where the cable comes out of the transmission, then I would check where it connects to the back of the speedo. This one is a little more difficult, as you need to be a contortionist to get in behind the dash. However, there is a neat trick to all of this, take out the two screws on each end point in the dash and replace them with 1/4 x 20 screws that are at least 4 inches long, then take out the remaining screws. Now the dash will slide out so that it is easier to get behind the speedo. I would unscrew the connector there and check to make sure the cable did not break. If it did break it is not that hard to replace and the cost of a new one is around 20 to 30 bucks. Good luck on the new car....
Hey !!!! Did you buy the 65 that was for sale in Wake Forest? It looked real nice in the photos. :auto: I'm located in Raleigh and also own a 65. Maybe we can swap stories, info, etc.
Thanks very much for the advise. I did check it out and sure enough it was loose. However, I don't know if it worked or not as it won't stop raining here. So we'll see.
Can I burden you for another piece of advise? I know that I have a break line that is about to go. (the steel break lines) Would you recommend replacing all of them while at it? And by the way, some of the lines are nearly inaccessible.....any advise?
Thanks very much for being so helpful..... I've hear that about corvette people!
if you have just bought the car, and have little to no experience in how well maintained the brakes are, then i'd replace whatever i had any suspicion about, regardless of cost. brakes are cheaper to replace than other things are to make whole again.
i was driving a old truck once when a brake line perforated. i had no pedal and i had just taken a highway off ramp. at that moment, i would have paid any price to get stopped without hitting something.
